Shifting polar bear Ursus maritimus denning habitat availability in the European Arctic

چکیده
Abstract Climate warming has resulted in extensive sea ice loss across the Arctic. Polar bears ( Ursus maritimus ) rely on for hunting, resting, travelling and some parts of Arctic also maternity denning. In European Arctic, polar snow drifts land to den give birth. Consequently, timely arrival around masses during autumn is important pregnant females reach their denning habitat from hunting grounds. We defined as landforms necessary accumulate a depth sufficient dens. quantified availability terrestrial three archipelagos throughout last four (1979–2020) next eight decades (until 2100) using these islands. Across study area, clear trend was visible towards later arrival, varying up 102 days. Female now have 33% available compared 1980's many areas became inaccessible time start By 2090's, all were projected be bears. This decline unequally distributed, with most reduction Svalbard Novaya Zemlya until 2020, whilst Franz Josef Land remained unchanged 2020 but predicted become by end century. work emphasizes importance temporal dimension dynamics persistence bear populations.

Crescentic Glomerulonephritis in a Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus)
Spontaneous crescentic glomerulonephritis (CrGN) in animals has only been reported in dog and sheep. We report the pathological features of CrGN in a 17-year-old male polar bear that died due to renal failure. Histologically, the lesions were characterized by fibrocellular crescents, adhesion between Bowman's capsule and the glomerular capillary tuft and an increase in the mesangial matrix in g...
متن کاملLumbar laminectomy in a captive, adult polar bear (Ursus maritimus)
BACKGROUND Animals held in captivity tend to live longer than do their wild counterparts, and as such, are prone to developing age-related degenerative injuries. Here, we present a case of an adult female polar bear with symptomatic lumbar stenosis. There is a paucity of literature on large mammalian spine surgery, and anatomical differences between humans and other vertebrates must be taken in...
متن کاملPolar bear Ursus maritimus hearing measured with auditory evoked potentials.
While there has been recent concern about the effects of sound on marine mammals, including polar bears, there are no data available measuring the hearing of any bear. The in-air hearing of three polar bears was measured using evoked auditory potentials obtained while tone pips were played to three individually anaesthetized bears at the Kolmården Djurpark. Hearing was tested in half-octave ste...
متن کاملThe Cause of Stereotypic Behaviour in a Male Polar Bear (Ursus Maritimus)
This study was focused on finding the cause of stereotypic behaviour in a male polar bear (Ursus maritimus). The zoo wants to reduce the stereotypies present in their male polar bear. However, this can only be accomplished if the cause of the behaviour is identified and targeted [1]. In this study external factors from 3 different categories (i.e. husbandry, geography and environment) are inves...
